The US Geological Survey and the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred off the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido on Saturday night.
The offshore tremor that affected the coastal cities of Kushiro and Nemuro was followed by no tsunami warning.
No early reports of damage or injuries were published by major Japanese media sites.
The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at 10:27 pm (13:27 GMT) at a depth of about 43 kilometres (27 miles).
An expert on NHK’s public channel cautioned locals to be on the lookout for earthquakes for the next week.
