Muslims in China camps reportedly subjected to rape, US 'disturbed'

We are deeply disturbed by reports of systematic rape and sexual abuse against women in internment camps for ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in China’s Xinjiang, the State Department of the United States said on February 3, 2021.

The rape, sexual abuse, and torture of women in internment camps were earlier reported by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC).

“Several former detainees and a guard have told the BBC they experienced or saw evidence of an organised system of mass rape, sexual abuse, and torture,” the British Broadcaster had said in its report.

“We are deeply disturbed by reports, including first-hand testimony, of systematic rape and sexual abuse against women in internment camps for ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang,” a State Department spokesperson said when he was asked to comment on the matter.

“These atrocities shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences,” he added.

He also sought “immediate and independent investigation by international observers” into the rape allegation besides other atrocities being committed against the community in Xinjiang.
