Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is known for promoting the Northern Sea Route as an alternate passage. It is along Russia’s Siberian coast.
The vessel MV Ever Given got stuck during a sandstorm. It has blocked a key waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. It also handles more than 10 per cent of global maritime trade.

According to Russia’s nuclear agency Rosatom, there are good reasons to consider the Northern Sea Route as a viable alternative to the Suez Canal Route.
