Russia-Ukraine war: Indian Student dies in Kharkiv; Russian missile blows up govt building

Published Date:

An Indian student has died in Russian shelling in the city of Kharkiv in Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday. The student was identified as Naveen from Karnataka.

The MEA sais that it was in touch withe the student’s family. “With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family,” MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

“Similar action is also being undertaken by our Ambassadors in Russia and Ukraine,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, India had asked its stranded citizens in Ukraine to ‘leave Kyiv urgently today’. An Advisory to all the Indians in Kyiv stated, “All Indian nationals including students are advised to leave Kyiv urgently today. Preferably by available trains or through any other means available (sic),” Indian Embassy in Ukraine said.

Meanwhile, Russia has now started targeting residential and administrative buildings in major cities in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has shared a video on Twitter which shows an administrative building go up in flames after being hit by a Russian missile.

The satellite pictures also show Russian tanks on the outskirts of the Ukraine’s capital. The city has been witnessing turmoil since Friday after Russia intensified its attacks. Throughout the weekend, Ukraine witnessed fighting on streets and attacks on residential buildings.

India has been trying to speed up the evacuation process of thousands of Indian who are still stuck in the war-hit country.

So far, about 8,000 people have been brought back to the country as Russia began a “full-scale” invasion of Ukraine last week.

“Russian forces have increased their use of artillery north of Kyiv and in the vicinities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv. The use of heavy artillery in densely populated urban areas greatly increases the risk of civilian casualties,” the UK’s ministry of defence said in a tweet, adding that “the Russian advance on Kyiv has made little progress so far”.

Indian PM Narendra Modi also held three high-level meetings discussing the Ukraine crisis.

Earlier, he had also met President Ram Nath Kovind to discuss the issue of stranded Indian in Ukraine.
