Russia eyes formal annexation of 4 Ukrainian regions, West frowns, warns Moscow

Published Date:

Russia will formally annex four Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine on Friday, said President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman.

“Tomorrow in the Georgian Hall of the Grand Kremlin Palace at 15:00 (1200 GMT) a signing ceremony will take place on the incorporation of the new territories into Russia,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He also stressed that the Russian leader will make a major speech at the event. So far, Ukraine’s Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions have been occupied by the Russian army. Russia’s Putin has waged a war against Ukraine, now it has been almost 6 months that the Crimean peninsula is witnessing new challenges every single day.

What it calls ‘referendums’, Moscow organised them in these four regions that it controls. All four Russia-backed leaders of the regions said they were in Moscow. Soon, a meeting with President Putin is also expected.

This move comes eight years after Moscow annexed the Crimea peninsula. But this would mark a significant escalation in the ongoing war.

The West and its allies have also warned Russia against the annexations.

Russia to use nuclear weapons?

Last week, Vladimir Putin also announced a military call-up. Not only this, the warring country had threatened to use nuclear weapons to defend its land.

Politically speaking, Russia intends to play clever by annexing the occupied areas of Ukraine.

This way it will be able to argue that Russian territory is coming under attack from the West and its allies.

Moreover, Finland announced it will significantly restrict Russians from entering for tourism or for onward travel to other EU countries.
