Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, MBS has been named as the Prime Minister. His new role comes in line with the king’s previous delegation of duties to him.
MBS will be representing the kingdom in foreign visits and also chair summits hosted by the kingdom.
As per Reuters, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz named his son Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the kingdom’s PM. his second son Prince Khalid as Defence Minister.
The royal decree dictates to keep another son, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, as Energy Minister.
However, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan and Investment Minister Khalid al-Falih remained unchanged.
“HRH the crown prince, based on the king’s orders, already supervises the main executive bodies of the state on a daily basis, and his new role as prime minister is within that context,” the official said.
MBS the new PM of Saudi
The crown prince, also known as MbS, had been the Defence Minister. He has also been the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia.
The Kingdom remains the world’s top oil exporter and a major U. S. ally in the Middle East.
Moreover, King Salman will still be presiding over the cabinet meetings that he attends, as per the royal decree.
The octogenarian King is the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites. King Salman became ruler in 2015 after spending more than two-and-a-half years as the crown prince. In the past, he has been hospitalised several times.
Saudi under Crown Prince MBS
Prince Mohammed gets the credit for changing Saudi Arabia radically. Since he came to power in 2017 he made efforts to diversify the Saudi economy; King Salman focused on generating revenue from the oil-based economy; he also brought many sought-after reforms for women; he allowed women to drive while curbing the clerics’ power over society.
But, with every major change come even greater consequences. His reforms have come with a big crackdown on dissent. He is known for jailing outspoken activists, royals, women rights activists and businessmen among others.
After the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul in 2018, the stifling got public.
Khashoggi’s killing has somewhere affected King Salman and MBS’s reputation in world politics. It had also strained the Saudi kingdom’s ties with the West, especially the US.
Saudi Economy under MBS
Saudi PM MBS is modernizing the economy, creating better opportunities within the country. Yet it comes with its own cost of criticism from the underbelly of the orthodox sections. Additionally, his notoriety for stifling dissent also creeps in on global platforms.
To reiterate, he openly changed laws in favour of women.
Furthermore, The Kingdom of Saudi is spending a lot of money to create new cities and tourist spots. These aim to cater to long-term plans for the post-oil world economies.
