Shehbaz Sharif comes as the new face of the Prime Minister ship of Pakistan. The 70-year-old younger brother of the former PM was nominated on Sunday. After his name was nominated, Mr Sharif thanked the opposition leaders for “standing up for the Constitution”.
The former PM Imran Khan now stands as the first Prime Minister in Pakistan’s history removed by a no-trust vote.
However, the captain stayed defiant till the last ball, in his words. Besides, it was Shehbaz Sharif who had been leading the vigil against Imran Khan.
Who is Shehbaz Sharif- the new Prime Minister of Pakistan?
The younger brother of Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz was elected to the National Assembly in 1990. But, after the 1999 military coup, both Shehbaz and Nawaz were forced to spend several years in exile in Saudi Arabia.
Both the Sharif brothers have been accused of corruption.
Shehbaz Sharif returned to Pakistan in 2007 after which he was nominated for the post of PML-N president in 2017.
This was the time when his brother Nawaz was found guilty on charges of concealing assets pertaining to the Panama Papers. Following this the senior Sharif was disqualified from holding office.
So far, what is clear is that the new Prime Minister to-be Shehbaz Sharif has cordial relations with Pakistan’s military. (DONT MISS: How Imran played till last ball)
The new Pakistan PM face has also served three terms as Chief Minister of the Punjab province.
Moreover, the junior Shehbaz has worked with China on its China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiatives. It is to be noted here that India had raised objection to its CPEC over the sensitive Pak-occupied Kashmir area that it crosses.
From time to time, Shehbaz Sharif has stressed how important it is to have good ties with the US. For him, the immediate challenges remain to tackle the rising inflation and decreasing foreign exchange reserves. He will be the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan.
