Donald Trump's Upset Victory in Michigan: How Muslim Voter Support Contributed to the Downfall of Kamala Harris
Washington, D.C.: Donald Trump emerged victorious in the United States presidential election Tuesday, beating Kamala Harris to the White House. What made Trump's victory notable is that he performed significantly better than expected in crucial swing states, and a new source of unexpected support to his campaign came from the Muslim voters, particularly in Michigan, a state the Democrats have long dominated due to its large Muslim population.
According to reports, voters in Michigan are Muslim who voted for Trump. During recent campaign rallies, the President reached out to Muslim leaders and assured them that he addresses foreign policy issues affecting their communities. He spoke on campaign rallies in Dearborn, the U.S., which has the largest number of Muslims in the U.S., and said they are dissatisfied with how the Biden administration is carrying out its foreign policies towards the Gaza and Ukraine conflicts.
Trump's overtures seem to have found a resonance with him, when a top Muslim leader said he is "a strong advocate of peace." He said he would negotiate more vigorously on Gaza and Ukraine peace efforts, where he charged Biden didn't focus enough. This message, along with his direct engagement with Muslim leaders, seems to have resonated among Arab and Muslim voters who were not pleased with U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict that has been ongoing for several weeks.
