US Presidential Election 2024: Donald Trump Questions If Kamala Harris Is 'Indian Or Black
The Republican candidate, Trump, and Democratic contender Harris are both ramping up their campaigns, leading to heightened scrutiny and allegations from both sides.

Former President Donald Trump recently made headlines with his remarks questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, Trump alleged that Harris is exploiting her Black identity for political gain. He questioned why Harris, who he claimed always identified with her Indian heritage, is now positioning herself as Black.
Trump’s comments have ignited debate, coming as the U.S. presidential election approaches and political rhetoric intensifies. The Republican candidate, Trump, and Democratic contender Harris are both ramping up their campaigns, leading to heightened scrutiny and allegations from both sides.
Trump's remarks seemed to suggest that Harris’s shift in self-identification was opportunistic. “I don’t know if she’s Indian or Black,” Trump said. “I respect both communities, but I don’t think Harris holds that respect.” According to Trump, Harris had always promoted her Indian heritage, and her current emphasis on her Black identity appears inconsistent.
The White House quickly condemned Trump’s comments. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the remarks “disrespectful,” emphasizing that it is up to Harris to define her own identity. “No one has the right to dictate who someone is or how they should be recognized,” Jean-Pierre stated. “This is a personal decision, and Trump's comments are offensive regardless of his position.”
The focus on Harris’s racial identity can be linked to the significant voting blocs in U.S. elections, including African Americans, South Asians, and Hispanics. Since Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, Harris has garnered support from these groups, enhancing her standing in the Democratic primaries.
Recent polls reflect Harris’s growing support. According to an Ipsos survey, her approval rating rose to 43% last week, up from 35% previously. In contrast, Trump’s approval rating has declined to 36%, with a disapproval rating of 53%.
Harris has also received a boost from prominent figures such as former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. On July 26, Obama personally conveyed his support for Harris’s candidacy. Obama expressed pride in supporting Harris, a sentiment that Harris acknowledged with deep appreciation.
As the Democratic Party prepares for its presidential candidate selection on August 1, Harris’s path to the nomination appears increasingly likely, bolstered by high-profile endorsements.
Kamala Harris, the first woman Vice President of the United States, has a notable background. Elected to the Senate in 2020, she made history as the first female, Asian American, and African American Vice President. Born in Oakland, California, to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, Harris’s ascent to the vice presidency marks a significant milestone in American political history. She has vowed that while she may be the first woman in the role, she will not be the last.
