US Seizes Venezuelan President Maduro's Plane Amid Sanctions Violation Allegations

WASHINGTON — The United States has seized a private jet belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, escalating tensions between the two nations over alleged sanctions violations. The plane, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, was detained in the Dominican Republic and transported to Florida following claims of illegal acquisition.

The U.S. Department of Justice accused Maduro and his associates of circumventing American sanctions by purchasing the aircraft through a fake company registered in the Caribbean. The jet, valued at approximately $13 million, was reportedly bought under false pretenses and smuggled into Venezuela, bypassing U.S. regulations.

The aircraft, used by Maduro and his government officials, was under surveillance by U.S. authorities. Last Monday, the jet departed from Santo Domingo airport for Fort Lauderdale, prompting a swift response from American officials who intercepted the plane.

The controversy surrounding the aircraft traces back to late 2022 and early 2023, when a fictitious Caribbean-based company allegedly facilitated transactions on behalf of Maduro. The plane was then transported from the U.S. to the Caribbean in April 2023, eventually reaching Venezuela.

Since May 2023, the jet has been frequently seen flying over Venezuelan military bases and other locations. In July 2024, despite widespread allegations of election irregularities and violence during the national elections, Maduro declared victory amid protests. The violence during the elections resulted in over ten fatalities and more than 2,400 arrests, with opposition parties accusing the Maduro administration of widespread electoral fraud.

Despite international pressure and domestic dissent, Maduro’s government has maintained its grip on power, navigating through sanctions and allegations to assert its authority. The seizure of the jet underscores the ongoing diplomatic strains and enforcement of sanctions targeting Venezuelan officials.
