The U.S. State Department Friday issued new guidelines to give boost ties with Taiwan. It aims to meet more freely with officials from Taiwan. Though this is bound to annoy Beijing.
“These new guidelines liberalize guidance on ties with Taiwan, consistent with our unofficial relations,” State Department statement said.
Taiwan’s representative office in Washington welcomes this move. This comes at a time of increasing cooperation in areas such as global health, economics and regional security.
This step comes amid tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has been complaining of repeated missions by China’s air force near the island.
The White House Friday said it was keeping a close watch on increased Chinese military activities in the Taiwan Strait.
Beijing also blamed the US for tensions after a U.S. warship sailed close to Taiwan. Taiwan remains China’s most sensitive territorial issue.
