Visa-Free Travel to Sri Lanka: Boosting Tourism and Simplifying Entry for 35 Countries

In a bid to revive its economy through tourism, Sri Lanka has introduced visa-free entry for citizens of 35 countries, including India, the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, and Australia. Starting from October 1, 2024, visitors from these countries can enjoy visa-free travel for six months, making it easier for tourists to explore Sri Lanka’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

Due to issues with its online visa portal, Sri Lanka temporarily suspended its e-visa service on August 2, 2024. Tourists must now obtain visas on arrival, as the e-visa service remains unavailable for the time being.

Sri Lanka’s newly elected President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has also announced plans to reintroduce the e-visa facility, aiming to streamline the entry process for tourists. However, concerns regarding the legality of the e-visa contract have triggered an investigation. Despite these challenges, the e-visa system is projected to generate $2.75 billion over 16 years for the country.

This move is expected to significantly boost tourism, supporting Sri Lanka's efforts to elevate its economy after recent downturns. Tourists from eligible countries can now plan hassle-free trips to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty.
