A volcano erupted on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma Sunday. It sent out lava shooting in the air, streaming in rivers towards the villages from the Cumbre Vieja national park in the south of the island.
Evacuations began from nearby villages before the eruption, as per sources.
After the eruption, lava began edging down the hillside from five fissures torn into the hillside.
The video footage shows fountains of lava shooting hundreds of metres into the sky.
Canary Islands President Angel Victor Torres also informed Sunday night that 5,000 people had been evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Flights to and from the Canaries are continuing as normal, as per sources.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez arrived in La Palma for talks with the islands’ government.
