Why Russia-Ukraine war is not ending?

Published Date:

It has been more than eight months since Russia first attacked Ukraine. What it calls a “special military operation” Russia began bombarding neighbouring Ukraine incessantly.

The Russian operation launched on 24 February came as an excuse to protect the Russians living in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

What the world saw as an attack, Russia called it eliminating the threats to its security.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly.

He told the world about the warring nation’s intentions. He states that Russia is not serious about ending the war in Ukraine. He also insisted that his country would repel Russia’s attack and drive its troops out.

It is to be noted here that Zelenskyy’s speech at the UNGA came just after Vladimir Putin’s announcement of mobilizing the troops.

Russia’s initial goal was to overrun Ukraine. It wanted to overturn the Ukrainian government.
This came after Ukraine expressed its desire to join Nato. As Russia failed to get hold of Kyiv, Moscow shifted its focus to capture the east and south.

Why the Russia-Ukraine is not ending?

Escalating the war further, Russia also announced referendums in eastern and southern Ukraine becoming part of Russia.

Ukraine also highlighted how any negotiation idea by Russia was only a delaying tactic.

He said, “They talk about the talks but announce military mobilization. They talk about the talks but announce pseudo-referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy further said.

For all the casualties and destruction, Ukraine demanded just punishment for Russia.

“A special tribunal should be created to punish Russia for the crime of aggression against our state… Russia should pay for this war with its assets,” Zelenskyy added.

Russia launched a fresh onslaught against Ukraine on Tuesday. The western countries have placed widespread sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.

Sanctions mean removing major Russian banks from the international financial messaging system Swift. Also, it sanctioned more than 1,000 Russian businesses.

Moreover, the US has banned Russian oil and gas imports. On the other hand, the European Union has been indecisive owing to its overweighing gas needs.

World countries support Ukraine

The G7 bloc has Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US also promised to continue providing financial, humanitarian, military, diplomatic and legal assistance to Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Calling it a new wave of terror, Ukraine demanded new sanctions, new forms of political pressure and new forms of support for Ukraine.

However, Putin calls these attacks as a retaliation for Saturday’s explosion on a key bridge linking Russia to Crimea.

India also tried to help both the countries end this war. Poland has also been providing humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine.

Tightening its grip on the war, Russia added Meta to a list of terrorist and extremist organisations.

The two platforms were banned for “Russophobia”.

From world political leaders to Elon Musk, all are worried about the escalating war between the two nations.

As per reports, Elon Musk had personally rejected a request from Ukraine to extend his satellite internet service to Crimea. The decision came over fears that an effort to retake the peninsula from Russian forces could lead to a nuclear war.
