A strong US warning speaks of Russia planning a chemical or biological weapons attack in Ukraine. The warning could come true anytime sooner and the White House said, “we should all be on the lookout.”
As per the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), “a chemical weapon is a chemical used to cause intentional death or harm through its toxic properties.”
The use of chemical weapons is banned under international humanitarian law. It is regardless of any other valid reasons that could become potential causes for attacks.
This is due to their indiscriminate nature and the scale of destruction caused.
While the United States termed Russia’s claims about US biological weapon labs, and chemical weapon development in Ukraine as preposterous.
The warning comes after Western countries too shared similar concerns about Russian chemical weapons threats.
Concerns have been rising over the possibility of Russia using non-conventional weapons.
Russia plans to use chemical weapons?
The term non-conventional weapons also covers tactical (small-scale) nuclear weapons, biological weapons and dirty bombs.
Earlier also, allies of Russia have a history of using chemical weapons such as in Syria, Libya.
So far, the Russian mercenaries have been accused of committing human rights abuses in Africa and the Middle East, such as in Syria, Libya and the Central African Republic.
Bashar-al-Assad regime, one of Russia’s ally has also used chemical weapons in Syria against its civilians.
Moreover, Russia has been accused of using nerve agents; these are a type of chemical weapons used by countries to target enemies.
