Heavy Rains in Mumbai: Woman Drowns in Andheri Drain, Landslide at Mumbra Bypass, Red Alert Issued – Schools Closed
A 45-year-old woman tragically drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri, Mumbai, after heavy rainfall on Wednesday caused severe waterlogging in several parts of the city, according to officials.
The incident occurred around 9:20 PM near gate no. 8 in Andheri East’s MIDC area. Local police and the fire brigade were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene to rescue the woman, identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that Gaikwad was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and transported to Cooper Hospital, where she was unfortunately declared dead.

In a statement, the BMC said, "A 45-year-old woman, Vimal Gaikwad, drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. She was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and taken to Cooper Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead."
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding districts until 8:30 AM on Thursday. Districts such as Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are also on red alert.
Landslide at Mumbra Bypass
A landslide occurred on the Mumbra bypass, adding to the city's traffic woes by causing a jam for over three hours on Wednesday.
Fire officer Swapnil Sarnobat stated, "The traffic was stuck for about three hours. During this time, the traffic department managed the flow from one side. Thankfully, there were no casualties reported."

Due to the relentless downpour, both the Mumbai Police and BMC issued warnings, urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
In an advisory posted on X, they stated, "With continuous rain and a red alert in place, citizens are advised to avoid venturing out unless essential. Stay away from coastal and low-lying areas."
Maharashtra Schools Shut Today
In response to the red alert from the IMD, schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain closed on Thursday. The BMC had earlier announced a similar closure of educational institutions in Mumbai.
