Meet Hashima Hasan, Indian Scientist Behind NASA's Rs 73,700 Crore Project
New Delhi: In a world where Indian women are making significant strides on the global stage, one name stands out for her contributions to space exploration—Hashima Hasan, a renowned scientist from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, who is currently serving as the Deputy Program Scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA. Her work has played a pivotal role in some of the most groundbreaking space projects, including the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes.
Born and raised in Lucknow, Hashima Hasan has had an illustrious career in the field of astrophysics. She secured her doctorate in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from Oxford University in 1976 and later moved to the United States after her marriage, where she began her career at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. There, she contributed to the optics of the Hubble Space Telescope, setting the foundation for her distinguished career in astronomy.

Hashima Hasan joined NASA in 1994 and soon took on crucial roles, including overseeing the James Webb Space Telescope, a project with a budget of approximately Rs 73,700 crore. Launched in 2021, this telescope has been a milestone in space exploration, and Hasan's leadership in Education and Public Outreach has been vital in making astrophysics accessible to the world.
