Hemant Soren Meets Jharkhand Governor, Stakes Claim to Form Government

Hemant Soren's JMM-led alliance clinched victory in the Jharkhand polls, winning 56 of 81 seats and securing a second consecutive term in power with a decisive mandate.

 

Hemant Soren, a leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met with Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Sunday to formally stake his claim to form the next government in Jharkhand. The development follows the INDIA bloc led by the JMM winning the state assembly polls with a resounding victory-56 out of 81 seats-all but guaranteed that the Soren coalition would retain its previous term in power for a second successive year.

Hemant Soren Claims Jharkhand CM Post After Election Victory

Minutes before assuming the office of governor, Hemant Soren was elected as the legislative party leader by unanimous resolution of leaders from the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand. Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay confirmed Soren's unanimous election that: "All party workers and leaders extended their support, and Hemant Soren was chosen as the leader of the Jharkhand Assembly House." The swearing-in ceremony of Soren is likely to be on November 28.
 
Soren Steps Down Before Taking Charge

As a matter of procedure, before staking his claim, Soren resigned as the chief minister. Meeting the governor and speaking to reporters, Soren said, "I have staked claim to form the government and handed over the support letter of alliance partners to the governor. He invited us to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony will be held on November 28.

Hemant Soren also won Barhait seat, defeating BJP candidate Gamliyel Hembrom by a huge margin of 39,791 votes. Soren garnered 95,612 votes, and Hembrom received 55,821 votes, underlining his popularity in the constituency. The win of the INDIA bloc by a landslide and Soren's leadership strengthen the influence of this coalition in the state. With Hemant Soren to swear in again, he will lead Jharkhand further for another term as he enters the next chapter with an enhanced mandate from the people.
