India Faces Major Setback as Hockey, Wrestling, and Cricket Removed from 2026 Commonwealth Games
India faces a significant setback as several sports, including hockey, cricket, wrestling, and shooting, have been excluded from the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games. Glasgow will host the event from July 23 to August 2, 2026, featuring only 10 sports, down from 19 in previous editions.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, is expected to impact India’s medal prospects, as the country has consistently excelled in these events. Sports like hockey and wrestling, where India has performed exceptionally well, are no longer part of the Glasgow Games.
Which sports have been removed?
In the 2022 Birmingham Games, 19 sports were featured, including hockey, cricket, and wrestling. However, the 2026 edition has removed hockey, cricket, wrestling, badminton, shooting, and more. Indian athletes have historically won medals in many of these disciplines, raising concerns about reduced medal opportunities in 2026.
Why were hockey and shooting removed?
Hockey was dropped due to scheduling conflicts, as the Hockey World Cup will take place just two weeks after the Commonwealth Games in Belgium and the Netherlands. India’s men's and women’s hockey teams, which have won several medals, will feel the loss.
