Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet is extremely dangerous. A good, original helmet protects your head from serious injuries during an accident, and it also shields your face and head from sunlight, dust, and dirt. However, some riders use flimsy plastic caps or even cricket helmets instead of proper protective gear. According to traffic rules, such helmets do not provide adequate safety, and the traffic police can fine you and even suspend your license for three months if you wear them. What Do the Rules Say?
If you are caught riding a two-wheeler wearing a construction helmet, a local cap-style helmet, or a cricket helmet, you will be fined. As per Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler is mandatory. The law also specifies that helmets should have a thickness of 20-25mm with high-quality foam. Most importantly, the helmet must have an ISI mark, ensuring it meets safety standards.
Furthermore, Section 129-A requires that the helmet you use must be of good quality in terms of size and material. Helmets like cricket helmets, construction helmets, and fake helmets do not meet these standards. If caught wearing such helmets, you can be fined ₹1,000, and your license may be canceled.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has also mandated that helmets without the ISI mark will no longer be sold in the country, and using them will be considered a violation. This step has been taken to enhance public safety.
Full-Face or Half-Face Helmet?
