Google's ALT Saathi to empower teachers through AI
Google has introduced ATL Saathi, a new AI-powered assistant designed especially for Indian teachers working in Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL). Built using Google's Gemini AI model, the platform aims to make it easier for teachers to conduct innovation, coding, robotics and science activities in schools. The launch is part of Google's broader plan to strengthen its AI presence in India while helping educators make better use of technology in classrooms.
The announcement was made during Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru, where the company also unveiled several new AI and cloud initiatives for Indian developers, startups and businesses. Besides education, Google introduced new enterprise AI tools and expanded local AI cloud offerings to meet India's growing demand for secure and locally compliant AI services.
What is ATL Saathi?
ATL Saathi is a desktop web application created by Google DeepMind in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under NITI Aayog. It acts as a 24x7 AI assistant for teachers running Atal Tinkering Labs in schools.
Instead of spending hours preparing lessons or searching for projects, teachers can ask ATL Saathi for help. The AI can suggest classroom activities, explain difficult concepts, create project ideas, provide step-by-step experiment instructions and even generate quizzes and learning material. The platform is based on the official ATL curriculum, ensuring that the information remains relevant to the programme.
Why has Google introduced this app?
India has more than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs, where students learn practical skills such as robotics, electronics, coding, artificial intelligence and design thinking. While these labs have helped introduce innovation in schools, many teachers need continuous training and support to confidently guide students through new technologies.
Google says ATL Saathi is designed to reduce this gap by giving teachers an AI assistant that is always available. Instead of replacing teachers, the app is meant to save their time and make lesson planning easier so they can spend more time mentoring students. The company plans to begin with 100 schools and gradually expand the platform to around 10,000 schools.
How will it help Indian teachers?
One of the biggest advantages of ATL Saathi is that it simplifies teaching.
Teachers can quickly generate project ideas suitable for different age groups, receive detailed experiment guides with safety instructions, create learning material in minutes and understand complex topics through AI-generated summaries, videos and infographics.
The platform also supports multiple Indian languages, allowing teachers to interact with the assistant in their preferred language and receive responses in the same language. This makes the tool more useful for schools across different states.
How can teachers use ATL Saathi?
ATL Saathi is currently being introduced as a web-based platform for schools that are part of the Atal Tinkering Labs network. Teachers can access the platform online and use it to: Generate classroom project ideas, create lesson plans and experiments, Prepare quizzes and learning material, Get explanations of robotics, coding and STEM topics, Receive AI support in multiple Indian languages.
For now, it is being rolled out in selected schools before a wider expansion.
What does Google gain from this initiative?
While ATL Saathi supports education, it also fits Google's long-term business strategy in India. By introducing Gemini AI into classrooms, Google familiarises teachers and students with its AI ecosystem at an early stage. This can encourage future use of Google's AI products, cloud services and enterprise solutions.
The launch also comes as global technology companies compete to become the preferred AI platform for governments, businesses and educational institutions. At the same event, Google announced expanded AI cloud infrastructure, enterprise AI tools and cybersecurity services designed to meet India's data localisation requirements, showing that education is part of a much larger AI strategy for the country.
Does India already have similar platforms?
India already has several digital education platforms, but most serve different purposes.
The government's DIKSHA platform provides digital textbooks, teacher training and educational resources. PM eVidya and SWAYAM offer online learning content for students and teachers. However, these platforms mainly focus on delivering educational material rather than providing an AI assistant that can generate projects, experiments and classroom activities in real time.
There are also private education platforms such as Class Saathi, which use AI for classroom assessments and student engagement. However, ATL Saathi is specifically designed for teachers working in Atal Tinkering Labs and is closely aligned with the official ATL curriculum and innovation programme.
A step towards AI-powered education
With ATL Saathi, Google is bringing artificial intelligence into one of India's largest school innovation programmes. If the pilot succeeds, the platform could help thousands of teachers reduce preparation time, improve classroom activities and encourage more students to explore science, technology and innovation. At the same time, the launch strengthens Google's position in India's rapidly growing AI and cloud technology market, making education an important part of its broader AI expansion strategy.
