Kia is preparing to make a bold entry into the premium MPV segment with the launch of the Kia Clavis on May 8. Dispelling earlier rumors, the Clavis is not a facelift of the existing Carens model. Instead, it is an entirely new offering positioned above the Carens in terms of pricing, features, and segment appeal. It is expected to compete directly with high-end MPVs like the Toyota Innova Hycross.

Clavis to Sit Above Carens in Kia’s Lineup

The Kia Carens has built a strong reputation as a practical and budget-friendly MPV, catering primarily to families looking for value for money. The Clavis, however, targets a more premium audience. With an expected starting price of ₹30–35 lakh, it is likely to serve customers seeking luxury, comfort, and advanced features in a family vehicle.

Features and Powertrain Expectations

One of the standout expectations from the Clavis is the inclusion of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), a feature not currently available in the Carens. The Clavis is expected to launch with a diesel engine, and an electric version may follow later, though there are no hybrid plans at this point.

Larger Dimensions and Premium Styling

The Clavis is anticipated to be larger than the Carens, offering increased interior space and road presence. The design is likely to reflect Kia’s latest styling cues, possibly influenced by the brand’s EV range, delivering a modern, upscale look suitable for a premium MPV.

Kia Carens Remains the Value MPV

While the Clavis aims for the premium market, the Kia Carens will continue to serve budget-conscious customers. It is currently priced between ₹11.49 lakh and ₹22.20 lakh on-road and offers impressive value. The Carens is available in diesel, naturally aspirated petrol, and turbo-petrol engine options, delivering up to 21 kmpl mileage.

The Carens comes loaded with features even in its base variant, including six airbags, hill descent control, a full digital instrument cluster, and leatherette seats. Its spacious seven-seater configuration, convenient one-touch folding second-row seats, and reclining third row make it ideal for family use.

Two Distinct MPVs for Two Markets

Kia’s strategy is to dominate both the value and premium MPV segments. The Carens continues to appeal to buyers looking for affordability, space, and reliability, while the Clavis targets premium buyers who want luxury features, larger cabin space, and tech innovations. Together, they form a dual-pronged attack to capture the full MPV market spectrum in India.

The Kia Clavis represents a major move for the brand into the premium MPV space and is expected to set a new benchmark in the segment. Meanwhile, the Carens retains its position as a dependable, high-value family vehicle. With the Clavis launch around the corner, it will be interesting to see how Kia balances both products and how the market responds to this new offering.
