KTM 650 Duke Spotted Testing: Is an India Launch Imminent?
Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM has been seen testing a new 650 Duke model overseas, signaling the potential introduction of an entry-level twin-cylinder roadster positioned below the 790 Duke. Reports suggest that this bike, with its 650cc engine, aims to compete with models from Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Triumph in the same segment.
KTM 650 Duke: Design and Production
The new KTM 650 Duke is expected to be manufactured in collaboration with Bajaj in India. This strategy would help keep production costs low and make the motorcycle more competitive in the 650cc category, which includes the Kawasaki Z650, Triumph Trident 660, and Yamaha MT-07.
Images of the 650 Duke indicate that it shares a platform with the 790 Duke but features a slightly more relaxed rider geometry. This design adjustment is likely intended to appeal to a broader customer base.
KTM 650 Duke: Specifications and Features
According to reports, the 650 Duke will likely utilize a modified version of the 790cc parallel-twin engine found in the 790 Duke, detuned to produce around 70bhp. The engine is expected to be paired with a 6-speed gearbox, though it remains uncertain whether it will include a quickshifter.
In terms of features, the KTM 650 Duke is equipped with USD forks, a rear monoshock, alloy wheels, dual front disc brakes, a single rear disc, LED lighting, and a TFT display. For electronics, it is anticipated to offer dual-channel ABS and traction control.
KTM 650 Duke: Potential India Launch
The crucial question is whether KTM will launch the 650 Duke in India. Given that the motorcycle is set to be manufactured in India and considering that KTM currently lacks a mid-tier upgrade option, it is plausible that the 650 Duke (or possibly a 690 Duke) could be introduced to the Indian market.
Furthermore, considering the historical partnership between Bajaj and KTM, there is a possibility that Bajaj could leverage KTM’s technology to enter the 650cc segment with a model of its own, similar to the relationship between the 390 Duke and the NS400Z. Enthusiasts will have to stay tuned for official announcements.
