T20 World Cup & Ambani Wedding

As 2024 comes to a close, YouTube has unveiled its list of top trending topics for the year, showcasing the platform's vibrant cultural moments. Among the highlights are the ICC T20 World Cup and the much-discussed "Ambani wedding," both of which captivated audiences worldwide.

The ICC T20 World Cup generated immense interest, with over seven billion views on YouTube. Fans flocked to the platform to relive key moments, analyze matches, and celebrate their favorite teams. Meanwhile, videos related to the Ambani wedding amassed over 6.5 billion views in India. The high-profile event became a global sensation, with viewers diving into discussions about international artist performances, glamorous fashion, and a star-studded guest list.

Ajay Vidyasagar, YouTube's Asia-Pacific regional director, noted the pivotal role of fans in amplifying these trends. "Fans were actively shaping these narratives through their creator contributions, transforming significant trends into cultural phenomena," he stated during a virtual media briefing on December 5.

The Power of Creators and Community

YouTube's Culture and Trends team compiled the list by analyzing metrics such as views, uploads, and creator activity. One standout example was the rise of "Moye Moye" Shorts, which garnered 4.5 billion views and influenced Gen Z vocabulary in India. According to Vidyasagar, "This demonstrates how trends on the platform evolve, integrating into everyday language and culture."

Creators also played a significant role in driving engagement. Jimmy Donaldson, better known as "MrBeast," was named the top trending creator of 2024 in India. His success can be attributed to Hindi-dubbed versions of his videos and collaborations with popular local creators like Ajey Nagar, also known as "CarryMinati."

Regional and Niche Content Flourishes

Regional creators and niche content also found massive audiences in 2024. Stand-up comedian Samay Raina’s videos were viewed 1.5 billion times, while Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s content racked up over 3.9 billion views. Hyperlocal creators such as Malayalam YouTuber "KL Bro Biju" and the Marathi song "Gulabi Sadi," featured in over three million Shorts globally, demonstrated how regional content transcends geographic boundaries.

Even creators focused on niche topics, like "Box of Vengeance," who reviews sports balls, gained popularity. Gaming content also saw remarkable growth, with Indian gaming streamer "Total Gaming" (Ajjubhai) gaining widespread attention. His face reveal video garnered 35 million views, while his gameplay watch-alongs accumulated over 900 million views this year.
