UPI Crash Agai: Paytm & Google Pay Users Hit By Payment Failures - What's Wrong?

For the second time this week, UPI payments are facing disruptions, leaving users struggling with failed transactions on apps like Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe. Many people reported errors while making payments, checking balances, or even receiving money. If your UPI payment isn’t working today, you’re not alone—here’s what’s happening.

What’s Causing the UPI Outage?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages UPI services, has not yet confirmed the exact reason. However, technical glitches or server overloads are likely behind the problem.

  • Users complained about transactions failing mid-payment.

  • Some saw errors like "Transaction declined" or "UPI service unavailable."

  • Bank servers like SBI, HDFC, and ICICI also faced temporary issues.

Which Apps Are Affected?

Almost all major UPI-based apps experienced problems, including:

  • Paytm

  • Google Pay

  • PhonePe

  • BHIM UPI

  • Bank-specific UPI apps (SBI Pay, iMobile by ICICI)

Many users took to Twitter (X) and DownDetector to report issues, especially during peak hours (morning and evening).

What Should You Do If UPI Fails?

Since UPI is down for many, here are some quick fixes:

  1. Retry after some time – Sometimes, the issue gets resolved automatically.

  2. Use net banking or cards – If urgent, switch to debit/credit card payments.

  3. Check NPCI’s official updates – Visit NPCI’s website for service alerts.

  4. Avoid multiple attempts – Too many failed transactions may temporarily block your account.

Why Does UPI Keep Failing?

This is the second outage in a week, raising concerns about UPI’s reliability. Possible reasons:

  • High transaction volume – Over 14 billion UPI transactions happen monthly.

  • Server maintenance – Sometimes, backend updates cause temporary disruptions.

  • Cybersecurity checks – NPCI may pause services to prevent fraud.

When Will UPI Be Back to Normal?

Most outages get fixed within a few hours. The NPCI or banks usually tweet updates once services are restored. Until then, users may have to rely on cash, cards, or other payment methods.

UPI is India’s most popular payment system, but frequent outages are frustrating. If your payment fails today, wait a while and try again. For urgent transactions, keep a backup payment option ready.
