Bengaluru Techie's Suicide: Wife Files Dowry Harassment Complaint, Accused of Abuse and Financial Control

In a tragic turn of events, a Bengaluru-based techie, Atul Subhash, died by suicide, leaving behind a heart-wrenching 24-page suicide note accusing his wife, Nikita Singhania, of harassment. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, and further details have emerged about a dowry harassment complaint filed by Nikita in 2022.

She said in her complaint that the parents and brothers-in-law of Atul Subhash and he himself were torturing her, both physically and mentally for extracting dowry. The complaint filed on April 24, 2022, in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur claims harassment began after her marriage to Subhash in 2019. Nikita alleged that the couple, who were living in Bengaluru, demanded an additional Rs 10 lakh from her family, stating they were unsatisfied with the dowry provided by her parents.

She reports of how Subhash would "rough up" his wife mostly after drinking, and spoke abominably of their marriage-just as "like a beast." Nikita reported she was also managed by the finances, transferring her salary into his account under compulsion. She says her health began to decline from then on, and the cardiac arrest in which her father died in 2019 was reportedly brought on or certainly exacerbated by stress caused over these issues.

Although Nikita sought the support of her family, she said that her parents had advised her to "keep living with it." The abuse continued and forced her to the edge. The suicide of Subhash has now added another dimension to the tragedy as a case of abetment of suicide has been registered against Nikita and her family members.

In the suicide note, Subhash stated that Nikita's story of father dying due to shock after the dowry demand was a lie. Her father had died from heart problems, Subhash said.
