MYSORE, India (AP) — The countdown has begun for the illustrious Mysore Dasara festival, one of India’s most celebrated cultural events. The 2024 Mysore Dasara will commence on October 3 and run through October 12, with various traditional ceremonies and festivities planned throughout the city.
The festival will kick off with a special event at the Chamundi Temple on October 3, starting at 9:15 AM. The Dasara celebrations will feature nine days of worship and festivities dedicated to Goddess Chamundi, culminating in the grand Vijayadashami celebrations on October 12.
One of the festival's main attractions, the Jamboo Savari, will take place on October 13. The traditional procession will begin at 4:30 PM and will include a majestic parade featuring decorated elephants and cultural performances. The event will conclude with a Panjeen Kavadya performance at 7:30 PM.
This year’s Dasara promises to be more elaborate than previous years, thanks to favorable monsoon rains which have allowed for a more lavish celebration. The state government has announced that the festival will feature enhanced festivities and a variety of cultural events. The final list of events and the official guest of honor are yet to be announced.
The Mysore Dasara, which dates back over 400 years, is renowned for its grandeur and historical significance. Originating in the 14th century, the festival typically occurs in late September or early October and spans ten days. It is celebrated with great pomp and shows the deep-rooted traditions of the Mysore royal family.
A major highlight of the Dasara festivities is the Jamboo Savari, a grand procession featuring elaborately decorated elephants, cultural tableaux, and musical bands. This year, Captain Abhimanyu will be seen carrying the golden howdah, a key element of the procession.
For those looking to experience the festival without hassle, the Mysore Dasara Gold Card will offer unrestricted access to various tourist sites, including reserved seating for the Jamboo Savari. The card distribution process will begin shortly and will be available online.
The Mysore Dasara is celebrated not only in Mysore but also in other regions of Karnataka, including Madikeri, Mangalore, Srirangapatna, and Chamrajnagar, each adding its unique flavor to the festival.
