Chennai Doctor Stabbed 7 times by Cancer Patient's Son and CM Stalin Promises New Safety Measures

A shocking incident occurred at Chennai's Kalaignar Centenary Hospital on Wednesday morning when a young man attacked and stabbed an oncologist seven times who was taking care of his mother for cancer treatment. State Chief Minister MK Stalin responded immediately to this event by initiating an inquiry into the attack, assuring medical help to the doctor injured and promising ways to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

He reportedly was 26 years old. He was said to be a patient attendant in the hospital. The attack happened in the OPD of the hospital, following the suspecting of the young man that the doctor had administered the wrong drugs to his mother. The attacker armed himself with a small knife worn on him as he assaulted the doctor-attacked while the latter bears a pacemaker. The doctor received chest and head wounds, stomach injuries, a forehead injury, and a puncture on the back. He was immediately admitted to the ICU and said to be stable.

The attacker tried to flee but was caught, and handed over to the police. Health Minister assured the people that there was no security lapse, and said the attacker managed to conceal the weapon and took it without the knowledge of the security personnel.

Nothing can be a better tribute to our health care workers than the selfless work of our government doctors who treat patients night and day, Chief Minister Stalin said in a message to X, where he added that "the government will take all measures to ensure the safety of our healthcare workers.".

It has brought forth a host of renewed concerns about safety of medical professionals, an issue that had hit national headlines just recently in the wake of the tragic incident in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital where a doctor was raped and murdered. Both the cases call for stringent measures within the hospital premises to ensure safety of healthcare professionals in India.
