Chennai Weather Update: Schools Closed in 10 Tamil Nadu Districts Due to Heavy Rain Warning

Heavy rain has been battering Tamil Nadu and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts which led to school closure in Chennai and ten other districts. The severe weather has resulted after a "well-marked low-pressure area" intensified over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Chennai and Tamil Nadu on High Alert
The IMD has issued an "orange alert" for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe due to expected heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, a "yellow alert" has been placed for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka. The districts affected in Tamil Nadu include Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur.
Stormy weather will bring moderate rain; some areas expect thunderstorms and lightning. Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai may receive heavy to very heavy rain, leading to considerable disruption. Conditions are also expected to continue for the next few days.
National Disaster Response Force Deployed
NDRF deployed to assist with rescue work and ensure citizens' safety. Emergency teams are ready, and the authorities warn people to exercise caution particularly along the coastal areas. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea on December 11-13 since the weather conditions will be so rough.
Weather Conditions Due to Low-Pressure System
The adverse weather is due to low-pressure systems. The associated low has been well formed and thus may intensify over the next 24 hours moving west-northwest wards along the TN-SL coasts as per forecast by the IMD.
This disruption occurs after those weather patterns reported earlier in the year when similar closure of schools also occurred November in districts of Tiruvarur and Cuddalore. During heavy falls, which start to intervene in daily life, the authorities are asking people to be alerted and prepared.
