Delhi Air Quality Turns Severe: AQI breaches 400-mark, visibility drops - All you need to know

The air quality in Delhi has suddenly turned disastrous with the Air Quality Index breaching the 400 mark, thereby entering the 'severe' category, on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Several areas of the national capital, including Anand Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Bawana, and Jahangirpuri, recorded AQI levels ranging from 400 to 470, making it extremely hazardous to breathe. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) stated that Delhi's AQI stood at a concerning 421 at 7 AM.

The deteriorating quality of air has reduced visibility around the city, adding to further woes for commuters and the residents. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature remained at 5°C, but it was heavy pollution that caused severe air conditions. Due to such adverse weather conditions, the Centre's air quality panel reinstated Stage 4 restrictions under GRAP to minimize the adverse effects of air pollution caused by Delhi's air.

Stage 4 GRAP restrictions are severe measures beyond the ones that have been implemented under the previous stages of GRAP. Consequently, schools in Delhi have been asked to shift to hybrid models of learning except for Classes X and XII in order to reduce the outdoor exposure of children. The step is taken to mitigate the health risks posed by the hazardous air quality in the city.

This deteriorating air pollution has resulted in an increase of respiratory problems among the residents who already have health issues. The government is asking people to stay indoors and take adequate precautions, such as wearing N95 masks or using purifiers, to avoid inhaling the harmful pollutants. The visibility in the city has drastically reduced, thus making it difficult to travel around Delhi, especially in regions where AQI levels cross 400.

The quality of Delhi's air still remains worrisome, while experts feel the long-term remedy is against the root cause of this problem. However, in this time, people need healthy and safe living standards.
