Delhi Elections 2025: Kejriwal Announces Free Electricity and Water for Renters in Delhi

In a major announcement before the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal announced a major welfare scheme that would provide free electricity and water to renters in Delhi. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, January 17, 2025, Kejriwal underlined the party's commitment to supporting the economically vulnerable sections of society, particularly those residing in rented accommodations.

Major Welfare Announcement for Tenants

Kejriwal announced that once AAP forms the government, a strong mechanism will be created so that millions of tenancy holders in Delhi get free electricity and water. He underlined that the majority of tenancy holders are from Purvanchal and other economically weak regions, residing in small and congested homes with limited sources of income.

We have been in touch with all sections of society constantly, taking more than 1.8 lakh suggestions and talking directly to 12,000 individuals," Kejriwal said. "Our manifesto will come in three parts, and the first part will be released today. The next parts will follow.

Kejriwal pointed out the dire need for such a scheme, noting that many renters struggle to afford basic utilities. "In Delhi, many renters live in extreme poverty, and it is essential that they benefit from initiatives like free electricity and water," he asserted. He underscored that while residents have been enjoying benefits from facilities such as mohalla clinics, schools, and hospitals, the provision of free utilities remains unaddressed.

BJP’s Reaction and Kejriwal’s Counterattack

Kejriwal in his speech criticized the AAP ruling government by claiming that the present government is corrupt. "As the Health Minister, I can say that their mohalla clinics are hubs of corruption, with a ₹300 crore scam and ₹100 crore worth of medicine contracts awarded to the Chief Minister's associates. We will investigate thoroughly and ensure that all involved are jailed**," he declared.

He also talked about the documentary film that was prepared on AAP, terming the BJP's motives behind it. "A documentary was privately screened for journalists without soliciting votes. Why is BJP so scared of it?" he said. Kejriwal condemned the BJP for conspiring to incarcerate AAP leaders. "This documentary will expose BJP's wrongs," he hoped.

BJP's Manifesto Criticism

Kejriwal further criticized the BJP's manifesto, terming it as merely a "Kejriwal letter" which promises to continue all of AAP's welfare schemes in Delhi. "BJP's manifesto is not genuine; it's just a promise to continue our work. AAP excels in governance and welfare, so why should voters give BJP their votes? " he questioned.

He said AAP is good at governance, and even BJP members praise them for their work, and that AAP's commitment to public welfare is something that sets them apart from the BJP.
Commitment to Continued Welfare Initiatives Kejriwal ended his speech by reiterating AAP's commitment to making the lives of Delhi's residents better. "We don't do politics for power; we work for the people.". Our welfare schemes have raised 25 crore people above the poverty line, and we will continue to implement all those initiatives that benefit all sections of society, he stated. He asserted that the Ayushman Bharat scheme was implemented successfully during AAP's governance, and now the Centre would extend health insurance up to ₹10 lakh to every family as its share by integrating state and central provisions.
