Delhi Metro Penalty: Stopping Metro Doors with Legs Could Lead to ₹10,000 Fine or 4-Year Jail Term | Metro Safety Rules Explained
Delhi Metro, often referred to as the lifeline of the city, carries millions of passengers daily across the capital and NCR. However, incidents of passengers attempting to stop the metro doors with their legs or hands have been on the rise, leading to serious safety concerns. In light of these frequent violations, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reiterated its strict safety rules to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operations.
Stopping Metro Doors is Against DMRC Rules
Many passengers, in a bid to assist fellow travelers or simply act heroically, attempt to stop the automatic closing of metro doors using their legs. Not only does this endanger their own safety, but it also risks the lives of others onboard. Such actions are a direct violation of DMRC guidelines, which have been put in place to prevent accidents. Earlier this year, a tragic incident involving a woman losing her life due to her saree getting stuck in the metro doors highlighted the gravity of these violations.
Heavy Penalties for Violating Metro Rules
According to the DMRC’s Metro Railway Operations & Maintenance Act of 2002, section 67, stopping metro doors with legs or any other body part is a punishable offense. Violators could face severe consequences, including a hefty fine of up to ₹10,000, imprisonment for up to four years, or both.
Social Media Reel Makers Adding to the Problem
In recent times, many individuals have been caught breaking these rules to create viral social media reels. DMRC has seen a surge in such cases, where passengers disrupt metro services for the sake of online fame. The corporation warns that offenders will face legal actions under section 67 of the Railway Act.
