Delhi pollution crisis: Air quality still 'very poor' with AQI at 373 as experts warn of future spikes
Delhi air quality stays in "very poor" category; AQI measured at 373 at 7 am on Friday. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), several parts of the capital recorded high pollution levels, including Chandni Chowk, IGI Airport, and Okhla Phase 2. Some locations crossed over into the "severe" category with readings above 400 in Anand Vihar, Wazirpur, and Mundka.
Air pollution crisis is on the rise, and the Union Personnel Ministry has asked government employees to curtail vehicular emission by carpooling or public transport. Following up with attempts to lessen the turmoil, office timings have also been changed, and options include operating between 9 am and 5:30 pm or from 10 am to 6:30 pm.
While Delhi saw a short break in the number of "severe" pollution days, experts say that this is not unusual during winter, when such events occur frequently between November and January. Already, Delhi has witnessed seven "severe" pollution days this year. If local and regional emissions don't show signs of slackening while bad weather persists, Delhi may experience further AQI spikes to qualify as "severe" again.
This situation is further compounded by the research conducted recently by Climate Trends, which already outlines the condition of Delhi and NCR concerning air quality. According to this study, pollution has been graded as "very poor," despite some minor changes experienced lately. Basically, meteorological conditions like wind and atmospheric pressure determine how air quality fluctuates.
As the Delhi government and experts stress vigilance and precautions to combat pollution, citizens continue to practice restrictions in outdoor activities and use air purifiers. Although there are slight improvements in air quality compared to previous years, managing pollution remains a major challenge for the residents of Delhi, especially during the winter season.
