Controversy Erupts Over VIP Entry at Mahakal Temple: Srikant Shinde Accused of Rule Violation

A new controversy has emerged at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain, involving VIP entry into the temple’s sanctum. On October 17, Srikant Shinde, son of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, along with his wife and two others, entered the temple's sanctum to offer prayers, breaking the existing restriction on entry into the area. The rule, which prohibits entry into the sanctum for regular devotees, requires them to view the Shivling from a distance. Despite this, the group spent approximately six minutes inside the sanctum, sparking public outrage.

The incident was caught on camera, and the video has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows the group entering the sanctum around 5:38 PM during the evening ritual. Many have questioned how Srikant Shinde and his companions were granted access to the sanctum, leading to allegations of preferential treatment and disrespect for the faith of ordinary devotees.

Temple Administrator Ganesh Dhakad stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible for this violation. He emphasized that no one can enter the sanctum without his permission. Ujjain Collector and Chairman of the Mahakal Temple Management Committee, Neeraj Singh, also confirmed that no official permission was granted for anyone to enter the sanctum.

VIP Entry at Mahakal Temple: A Recurring Issue

This is not the first time that VIP entries at the Mahakal Temple have sparked controversy. In the past, there have been several instances of similar debates over special access to the sanctum. Srikant Shinde, who is a three-time MP from Kalyan, Mumbai, was reportedly allowed entry due to his status as a Member of Parliament and the son of the Chief Minister.

Why Is Sanctum Entry Restricted?

The ban on entering the sanctum was put in place on July 4, 2023, in response to the heavy crowd during the Shravan season. The restriction continues today to prevent further damage to the Shivling, which has been deteriorating. The Supreme Court had previously ordered the temple management to take measures to protect the Shivling, including limiting the number of visitors inside the sanctum.

Congress and BJP at Odds

The incident has drawn political reactions, with Congress leader Shailendra Patel criticizing the violation, stating that rules and laws seem to be selectively applied in Madhya Pradesh. He emphasized that Mahakal Temple is a sacred site, and such breaches should not be tolerated. Meanwhile, BJP officials have assured that the matter will be investigated, with the temple administration expected to take appropriate action.
