India has reiterated its desire for peaceful and terror-free relations with Pakistan, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The Minister also touched upon India-China relations, showcasing progress in resolving border disputes.

India’s Call for Terror-Free Relations with Pakistan

During the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, S. Jaishankar stressed India’s commitment to fostering good relations with Pakistan. However, he underscored the need for a shift in Pakistan’s historical behaviour. “We would like to have good relations with Pakistan, like any other neighbour, but we also desire relations free of terrorists,” he said.

Strained Trade Ties Since 2019

India and Pakistan have experienced strained trade relations since 2019, primarily due to decisions made by Pakistan that disrupted economic ties. The External Affairs Minister reiterated that improving these relations hinges on Pakistan’s efforts to address India’s concerns.

“It is for the Pakistani side to show they are changing their past behaviour. If they don’t, there are implications on relations. The ball is very much in Pakistan’s court in this regard,” Jaishankar added.

Impact of Article 370’s Abrogation

The abrogation of Article 370, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, remains a pivotal issue in India-Pakistan relations. This move by India further complicated bilateral ties, with Pakistan expressing strong opposition. Jaishankar’s statement underscores the complexity of addressing these longstanding issues while ensuring national security.

Progress in India-China Relations

In a related development, Jaishankar provided updates on India’s relationship with China, stating that signs of improvement have emerged. This comes after a period of abnormal ties following China’s actions in 2020 that disrupted peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Resolution of Border Issues

The Minister highlighted recent military and diplomatic talks, including the October agreement on patrolling protocols along the LAC. He commended the swift and effective response of India’s armed forces to challenges posed by China’s actions.

“The disengagement phase at key friction points has been successfully completed, paving the way for discussions on de-escalation and better management along the LAC,” Jaishankar stated.

Focus on National Security

Jaishankar emphasized the government’s unwavering focus on national security while pursuing a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary issue. “The next priority is addressing the amassing of troops along the LAC, with a view toward de-escalation,” he added.

Key Challenges in Bilateral Relations

Pakistan’s Role in Improving Relations

  • Pakistan’s responsibility lies in demonstrating tangible behavioural changes to foster better ties.

  • Ongoing terrorism concerns remain a significant hurdle in normalizing relations.

China’s Border Tensions

  • Despite recent progress, tensions along the LAC continue to impact broader India-China relations.

  • Sustained engagement is required to resolve troop amassing and de-escalation issues.
