India’s Upcoming Wedding Season to Generate ₹5.9 Lakh Crore in Business

India is poised for a massive economic boost as the upcoming wedding season is projected to generate a staggering ₹5.9 lakh crore in business. According to a recent study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), around 48 lakh weddings are expected to take place nationwide in November and December 2024.

This year's wedding season is set to surpass last year's figures, which saw 35 lakh weddings generating ₹4.25 lakh crore. The increase is largely due to more auspicious wedding dates, rising from 11 in 2023 to 18 this year.

Delhi is expected to be a major hub, hosting approximately 4.5 lakh weddings and contributing around ₹1.5 lakh crore to the total business. The wedding season will officially kick off on November 12 and run until December 16, featuring numerous auspicious dates that are anticipated to drive significant spending on wedding-related goods and services.

Acharya Durgesh Tare, Convenor of CAIT's Veda and Spiritual Committee, noted that this extended wedding season will lead to increased business activity compared to previous years. The expected surge in demand will benefit a wide array of sectors, including clothing, jewellery, electronics, and food items.

CAIT's National Secretary General, Praveen Khandelwal, highlighted a growing trend towards Indian products, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives like "Vocal for Local" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat." He stated that Indian products are increasingly favored by consumers, indicating a bright future for domestic goods.

Wedding expenses are expected to vary widely, with costs ranging from ₹3 lakh for budget weddings to over ₹1 crore for high-end ceremonies. Services such as banquet halls, event management, catering, transportation, and photography will also see a significant rise in demand.

Another notable trend this year is the increased spending on social media services for wedding coverage, as couples seek to enhance their digital presence during their celebrations. Following this wedding season, festive celebrations like Christmas and New Year are expected to maintain the economic momentum, with another wave of weddings anticipated from mid-January 2025.
