Who’s Who in Ratan Tata’s Family: A Legacy of Leadership - Everything You Need To Know

Ratan Tata, the visionary leader of the Tata Group, led one of the world’s largest business conglomerates but lived a private life, far from the limelight. Many people don’t know much about his family, which also prefers to stay out of the public eye. Ratan Tata never married, but his family lineage is deeply rooted in India’s industrial history, starting with his great-grandfather, Jamshedji Tata.
The Founding Father – Jamshedji Tata
Ratan Tata’s great-grandfather, Jamshedji Tata, founded the Tata Group in 1868 and also laid the foundation of Jamshedpur, India’s first industrial city. Born in a Parsi family in Navsari, Jamshedji started his career with an export trading firm in Mumbai and went on to become one of India’s first major businessmen. He married Hirabai, and they had two sons: Dorabji Tata and Ratanji Tata.
Dorabji Tata – Continuing the Legacy
Jamshedji’s elder son, Dorabji Tata, followed in his father’s footsteps and became the chairman of Tata Group from 1904 to 1928. Dorabji married Meherbai, but the couple did not have any children. His leadership helped solidify the foundation of the Tata empire.
Ratanji Tata – Ratan Tata’s Grandfather
Jamshedji’s second son, Ratanji Tata, was Ratan Tata’s grandfather. Born in 1856, Ratanji became the chairman of Tata Group from 1928 to 1932. He married a French woman named Suzanne Brière, later known as Navazbai. They, too, did not have biological children but adopted a son named Naval Tata, who would go on to become Ratan Tata’s father.
Naval Tata – Ratan Tata’s Father
Naval Tata was adopted into the family and married twice. His first wife was Sooni, with whom he had two sons: Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata. Like Ratan, Jimmy never married. Naval and Sooni later divorced, and Naval married Simone, with whom he had a son, Noel Tata. This makes Noel Tata the half-brother of Ratan Tata.
Noel Tata and the Next Generation
Noel Tata married Aloo Mistry, and they have three children: Neville, Leah, and Maya Tata. Neville Tata married Manasi Kirloskar, a member of the Kirloskar family, while Leah Tata pursued her master’s degree in Spain.
