Tata 1mg Wants Big Money to Open New Shops

Tata 1mg, a company where you can buy medicines online, now wants to open shops you can walk into. To do that, it’s planning to raise ₹2,500 crore (about $300 million) from other companies and investors.

Tata already owns most of 1mg and helped it grow a lot since 2021. But now 1mg wants to go even bigger, and open many stores across Indian cities like Noida, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Gurugram.

Why Does 1mg Want More Shops?

Even though it sells most of its medicines online, 1mg says that opening real stores will help people get their medicines faster, maybe even in 30 minutes!

Where they can’t open stores yet, they are working with BigBasket (an online grocery store) to help deliver medicines.

How Is 1mg Doing Right Now?

In the last one year, 1mg earned around ₹2,500 crore, which is more than double what it earned in 2021. That means the company is growing really fast. It’s still spending a lot of money (₹180-200 crore each year) to grow, but its losses are going down.

Helping Hospitals Too

1mg is not just selling medicines — it is also working with hospitals and doctors. For example, it helps patients who have obesity or cancer from the first doctor visit to their full treatment and even makes special food and medicine plans.

Tough Competition

1mg is not alone. Other big names like Apollo 24/7, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart are also delivering medicines super fast — some in just 10 or 20 minutes!

But delivering medicines so quickly is hard and needs a lot of money. Also, some local chemists are not happy and say that online medicine delivery is not always legal. They have even asked the government to stop the rule that allows home delivery of medicines.

1mg’s boss, Prashant Tandon, said they are almost making a profit now, and opening new stores will help more people. They want to become a company that gives both online and offline health care — all in one place.
