BPL Colour TVs: T.P.G. Nambiar's Legacy in Indian Homes - All You Have To Know

T.P. G. Nambiar has given a never-to-be-forgotten touch to Indian electronics. He has transformed the Indian homes of the 1990s as consumer electronics and most specially with color televisions and later with appliances changed from ordinary to great standards under BPL brand, as no other brands made to compete with its level and qualities.

BPL Limited was established in 1961, but the primary business was medical equipment, including electrocardiograph machines. However, Nambiar realized that consumer goods were the way to go and shifted the business towards making televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines. The entry of color televisions in 1982 Asian Games was a landmark for BPL. With plants located at Palakkad and Bengaluru, the brand emerged as reliable and trendy.

At the peak in late 1990s, its turnover was ₹2,500 crores and therefore ranked as one of the most prominent in Indian electronics market. The Sanyo Electric tie-up during the early 1980s enabled BPL to reach great technological standards; that further helped it manufacture better electronic products and become attractive in the eyes of Indians.

Despite stiff competition by foreign brands such as Samsung and LG, following liberalization in the Indian market during the 1990s, BPL had somehow managed to retain market shares, but internal battles along with a legal dispute really drove the organization into an downtrend from which it failed to return.

In a remarkable turnaround, the company began reviving the brand under the son of T.P. G. Nambiar, Ajith Nambiar, in the period 2015-16. The company developed its product line diversification into LED TVs, air conditioners, washing machines, and various consumer electronics, thereby re-establishing itself in the market.

At the present time, BPL is doing excellent business: its gross profit for 2023-24 was as high as ₹13.40 crores and had a turnover of ₹71.93 crores in the same financial year. The stock had grown immensely with a phenomenal increase of 460 percent in last five years alone and jumped 30 percent in a year. This company shares are listed and traded over both the stock exchanges-national and Bombay, and BPL Limited current market stands at ₹530 crores.

T.P. G. Nambiar's legacy will live on in the modern consumer electronics industry with a testimony of innovation and quality through BPL. Thus, as the brand changes, so does it carry the spirit of Nambiar's vision, giving quality state-of-the-art goods to Indian families to enhance living space.
