Rupali Surana's Journey to UPSC Success: A Tale of Perseverance and Inspiration

In the labyrinth of memories, the story of Rupali Surana unfolds with a simple yet profound conversation that changed her life forever. It was during her eighth grade when her father, an influential figure in her life, introduced her to the world of civil services. This discussion about the responsibilities and impact of civil servants planted a seed in Rupali’s mind, setting her on a path of unwavering determination and resilience.

From that pivotal moment, every choice Rupali made was a step towards realizing her dream of becoming a civil servant. The journey was far from easy, marked by moments of learning, unlearning, and relentless perseverance. Even when doubts crept in, and the possibility of giving up seemed tempting, Rupali held on to her dream with steadfast resolve.

The Turning Point

Rupali's journey began in a business-oriented family in Rajasthan, where the interplay of her parents' roles profoundly influenced her upbringing. Her mother managed the household, while her father, through his business engagements, frequently interacted with government officials. These interactions left a lasting impression on Rupali, fueling her ambition to join the civil services.

Recalling a significant moment in eighth grade, Rupali shared how her father’s explanation of the civil services ignited a collective dream within their family. This early exposure solidified her resolve, leading her to opt for humanities in twelfth grade, with subjects like Political Science, Geography, and Economics. Excelling with an impressive 95% score, she secured admission to Miranda House, Delhi University, for a Bachelor of Arts program.

"It was clear that I had to pursue civil services," Rupali mentioned. "My maternal uncle, who is in academics, suggested I take up humanities rather than the longer route of B. Tech."

The Struggles and Triumphs

After graduation, Rupali embarked on her mission to conquer the UPSC CSE. Her initial attempts were fraught with setbacks. In 2018, she narrowly missed the prelims cutoff. The following year, she was thwarted by the CSAT, and in 2020, she again failed to clear the prelims. Despite these challenges, Rupali remained undeterred.

In her fourth attempt in 2021, she cleared the prelims and advanced to the interview stage, missing the final list by a mere 4-5 marks. Reflecting on this near miss, Rupali noted, "Even if my essay score had been average, I would have made it."

Amidst preparing for her marriage, the 2022 prelims presented another setback. This failure led her to reassess her career path. She decided to mentor aspirants at a coaching institute, an experience that reignited her resolve. Realizing she couldn’t waste her final attempt, Rupali recommitted herself to the UPSC journey, finally achieving her dream by securing AIR 386 in the UPSC CSE 2023.

A Source of Inspiration

Rupali’s husband, IPS officer Amrit Jain of the UP cadre, played a crucial role in her journey. Serving as ASP Aligarh, his dedication and success inspired Rupali to make the most of her last attempt. "He is truly an exemplary officer and his achievements motivated me. He encouraged me to address my weaknesses and try again without hesitation," Rupali shared.
