A.R. Rahman on Thug Life: Kamal Haasan Looks at Me Through the Screen!

A.R. Rahman, the musical genius of India, recently opened up about composing music for the upcoming film boldly titled Thug Life. This much-anticipated movie stars Kamal Haasan and is directed by Mani Ratnam. The conversation happened during the launch event of the film’s first song, Jinguchaa, in Chennai.

A.R. Rahman Feels the Pressure of Thug Life

Rahman shared that working on  Thug Life came with a mix of excitement and pressure. He jokingly said that while composing, he felt like Kamal Haasan was watching him from the screen asking, “What are you going to do now?” This shows how seriously Rahman took the challenge of delivering music that matches the expectations tied to  Thug Life

He also talked about the legendary film Nayakan, which was created by Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan together years ago. Rahman praised the film and its music by Ilaiyaraaja, calling it one of the most iconic pieces in Indian cinema history.

Thug Life Is Not Nayakan—It’s a New Chapter

Even though many people compare the two, Rahman made it clear that  Thug Life is not trying to be another Nayakan. He said, “This movie is not Nayakan, it’s different. I didn’t have that weight on me.  Thug Life has a modern sound and feel, something for today’s generation, but it still holds some magic from their past work together.”

The first single Jinguchaa is already creating waves online. The music feels fresh, stylish, and powerful—just like the tone of the film. With  Thug Life, Rahman, Kamal Haasan, and Mani Ratnam are coming together again to create something unforgettable.
