Kanguva Box Office: Suriya’s Big-Budget Film Struggles to Break Even
‘Kanguva,’ one of the most awaited movies of the year, has sparked a mix of admiration and criticism since its release. Despite its massive budget of ₹350 crore and a star-studded cast led by Suriya, the film has managed to collect only ₹60 crore at the Indian box office in its first 10 days. While audiences and critics have praised its performances and stunning visuals, many have pointed out flaws in its plot and loud background score.
The Story Behind ‘Kanguva’
The film tells the story of Francis Theodore, a man with a mysterious connection to a fierce tribal warrior from 1070. With such an ambitious premise, ‘Kanguva’ aimed to be a groundbreaking cinematic experience. However, the execution has left some fans disappointed, as the initial portions of the film felt disconnected and the sound design overly intense.
Amid the divided reactions, Suriya’s wife and acclaimed actress Jyotika penned an emotional note defending the film and addressing the criticism. In her heartfelt message, she expressed pride in Suriya’s daring attempt to elevate Tamil cinema, saying:
“I pen this note as Jyotika and a cinema lover, not as actor Suriya’s wife. Kanguva is a spectacle in cinema. So proud of you, Suriya, for daring to dream and pushing the boundaries of cinema. Yes, the first half-hour doesn’t work, and the sound is jarring, but flaws are a part of most Indian films. To me, ‘Kanguva’ is an absolute cinematic experience with incredible camera work and execution never before seen in Tamil cinema.”

Addressing Negative Reviews
Jyotika also voiced her disappointment over the harsh reviews the film has received. She criticized the media and industry insiders for overlooking the film’s positive aspects, saying:
“I’m surprised by the negative reviews from the media and certain fraternities. I have seen big-budget films with age-old stories, stalking of women, double-meaning dialogues, and over-the-top action sequences receiving less criticism. What about the second-half women action sequence and the young boy’s love and betrayal for Kanguva? It’s disheartening that these positives were overlooked.”
Her passionate defense not only sheds light on the movie’s strengths but also raises questions about the fairness of film criticism.
Despite the polarized reviews, ‘Kanguva’ has found an audience that appreciates its ambitious vision and cinematic scale. While its box office performance remains underwhelming compared to expectations, the film is gradually gaining attention for its technical brilliance and experimental storytelling.
As the dust settles, the film’s legacy may depend on how viewers interpret its bold attempt to redefine Tamil cinema. While it may not be perfect, ‘Kanguva’ serves as a reminder of the risks filmmakers take to push creative boundaries.
