Kiran Rao Says “Aamir Khan Has No Clue About Azad’s School”: Inside Their Co-Parenting Journey
Kiran Rao reveals Aamir Khan’s limited involvement in son Azad’s school life, sharing insights into their co-parenting journey and the challenges of balancing roles.
Since their separation in 2021, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and filmmaker Kiran Rao have co-parented their son Azad. Despite Aamir’s busy schedule as a top-tier actor, the couple has managed to find a balance, although it hasn’t always been easy. Recently, Kiran shared her honest experiences about co-parenting Azad, especially given Aamir’s demanding career.
In a candid conversation with Kareena Kapoor on the show What Women Want, Kiran Rao revealed the complexities of co-parenting with a “very busy father.” She noted that even during their marriage, much of the primary parenting fell on her shoulders. Since their divorce, however, she has seen positive changes in Aamir’s involvement with Azad, albeit with some limitations.
“Aamir knows nothing about school,” Kiran admitted with a laugh, adding that this challenge is common for many fathers. She explained, “Most dads prefer not to get involved in school-related matters. They’re like, ‘Leave the school stuff to you; I’ll handle other things.’”
Co-Parenting Challenges and Growing Involvement
Kiran also expressed that post-divorce, the process of co-parenting with Aamir has become much smoother. “Now, it’s much easier, and Aamir is more involved,” she shared. For now, they live close by, with Kiran upstairs and Aamir downstairs, making it easier for Azad to spend time with both parents.
As Azad grows older, Kiran has noticed that he enjoys his father’s presence more, and she feels comfortable leaving him with Aamir. This shift has brought relief, allowing Kiran to feel more relaxed and confident in their arrangement.
Reflecting on her experience as a single mom, Kiran shared that Azad has been a supportive and empathetic child. “I’ve had only good days,” she said, describing the strong bond they’ve built over the years. Being a single parent has created a unique connection between them, allowing Azad to be a source of comfort and humor during tough times. “He makes me laugh like crazy,” Kiran added with warmth.
However, Kiran acknowledged that single parenting also comes with its challenges. “For single moms, the bad days are when you really need a break, but your co-parent can’t be there,” she explained. Fortunately, Kiran’s parents often step in to help her during such moments, though she recognizes the difficulty of not being able to completely switch off from her responsibilities.
Aamir Khan’s Reflections on Fatherhood
Previously, in an interview with Rhea Chakraborty, Aamir Khan reflected on the challenges of being an involved father. He shared his regrets over missing key moments in his children’s lives due to his hectic career. “Ira was struggling with depression; she needed me then. Junaid is starting his career, and I wasn’t there for him either. Now, Azad is nine, and his childhood is passing by quickly,” he confessed.
Aamir also expressed the emotional connection he feels with his fans through his films, which often took precedence over family moments. Looking back, he admitted that he lacked awareness of his children’s feelings and struggles during their formative years.
Building a Supportive Co-Parenting Environment for Azad
Despite their challenges, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan continue to create a nurturing environment for Azad. As they navigate the path of co-parenting, both parents are committed to being there for him in their own ways. While Kiran finds joy in her close bond with Azad, Aamir is gradually learning the importance of prioritizing family over work.
Their journey highlights the universal challenges of balancing work and family, resonating with many who juggle similar responsibilities. As Azad grows, it’s clear that both parents are dedicated to his well-being, each bringing their unique strengths to support his growth.
