Shah Rukh Khan Reflects on Devdas: Role Led to Alcohol Struggles

Shah Rukh Khan, the leading man of the iconic film Devdas, has opened up about the personal struggles he faced during and after the making of the movie, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Released in 2002, Devdas captivated audiences and became a commercial success, but the role took a toll on Khan, leading to increased alcohol consumption.

Khan recently reflected on his experiences while attending the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where Devdas was showcased. He received the prestigious Pardo alla Carriera Award, expressing his gratitude for the recognition. "I feel that if I make significant films, my parents will be able to watch them from above," he shared, adding a heartfelt sentiment about his mother, whom he believes has become a star in heaven.

The film Devdas faced challenges in casting, with many actors initially hesitant to take on the role of the tormented lover. Ultimately, Khan stepped up to portray the iconic character, which also featured renowned actresses Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. Reflecting on the emotional depth of the character, Khan acknowledged that it led him to indulge in alcohol more frequently after filming wrapped up.

When asked about the rumors regarding his drinking habits, Khan humorously remarked, “Well, I did win the Best Actor Award! I might have taken a sip while portraying that character—it certainly seemed to help, but it came with its downsides. Truth be told, I did start drinking more after this film.
