Suriya Faces Setback: ₹350 Crore Film Shelved After Kanguva's Flop
Suriya, one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars, has recently shifted from Chennai to Mumbai. While the actor cited his children’s education as the reason for the move, speculations are rife that Suriya is preparing for a major Bollywood debut. However, fans eagerly waiting for his Pan-India film Karn may be in for some disappointment.
Reports suggest that the ambitious project, which was set to star Suriya and Janhvi Kapoor, has been shelved once again. The film, a mega-budget adaptation of the Mahabharata’s epic hero Karna, was being directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment.
What Went Wrong With ‘Karn’?
Despite its grand vision and a staggering budget of ₹350 crore, Karn has faced several hurdles. This isn’t the first time the project has been halted. Earlier, financial constraints had paused pre-production, but the team restarted work with high hopes.
However, industry insiders suggest that the lukewarm reception of Suriya’s last film Kanguva may have played a role in this setback. Reports claim that production has now stopped indefinitely. Neither the actors nor the production house has issued an official statement so far, leaving fans in suspense.
Karn was set to feature not just Suriya and Janhvi Kapoor, but also powerhouse performers like Vijay Varma, Ali Fazal, and Avinash Tiwary in pivotal roles. The film was planned as a multi-lingual release in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi, aiming to make a mark across India.
The film’s grandeur and its all-star cast had already created massive buzz, making this shelving news even more disappointing for fans.
According to media reports, the project has already incurred ₹15 crore in post-production costs. This raises questions about the future of the film. Will Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, known for hits like Rang De Basanti, revive his dream project with another production house? Only time will tell.

For many, the prospect of seeing Suriya as the heroic Karna and Janhvi Kapoor as Draupadi was a dream come true.
