The Kerala Story 2: Sudipto Sen’s Next Film to Uncover Radicalization in Kerala, What to Expect?

The Kerala Story 2

Sudipto Sen, the director of the 2023 film The Kerala Story, recently addressed media reports surrounding the possibility of a sequel to his film.

These reports suggested that a follow-up to The Kerala Story would be based on the Hema Committee report, which sheds light on the exploitation and harassment of women in the Malayalam film industry. However, Sen has refuted these claims, clarifying that while a sequel is in development, it will not be related to this particular issue.

Speaking in an interview earlier this month, Sudipto Sen shared his thoughts on the ongoing rumors, stating that he and producer Vipul Shah had a good laugh after reading the false reports. Sen confirmed that the film’s sequel is in the scripting phase, though no official timeline has been announced for its release. However, insiders have revealed that the production is expected to begin early next year, with a potential release in the latter half of 2025.

Sequel Confirmed, But Not Based on Hema Committee Report

While Sen dismissed the Hema Committee rumor, he reassured fans that a sequel is indeed coming. “There will be a sequel to the film, but it has nothing to do with the Hema Committee report,” Sen clarified, aiming to put an end to the misleading reports.

A source close to the production hinted at the direction the sequel might take. According to this source, The Kerala Story 2 will delve into the radicalization of Kerala society, particularly focusing on the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalism in the state. The film is said to explore how certain movements have led to an increase in ISIS recruitment and other anti-national activities, especially in the northern parts of Kerala.

What to Expect from the Sequel

One notable aspect that has been confirmed is the casting decision. According to the insider, The Kerala Story 2 will feature an entirely new cast, allowing for fresh perspectives and performances. This decision indicates that the sequel will stand as a separate narrative, distinct from the original film.

This anticipated sequel has already sparked conversation, and though its subject matter promises to touch upon sensitive issues, it seems to steer clear of political and religious debates. The filmmakers aim to offer a gripping storyline centered around societal changes in Kerala, making it not just a continuation but an expansion of the themes explored in the first film.

As production gears up to start early next year, fans can expect more updates in the coming months. For now, it’s clear that while The Kerala Story 2 will tackle significant issues, it will do so from a narrative angle that explores the broader consequences of radicalization in society.
