Flying High: What’s the UDAN Scheme?

The UDAN scheme is designed to make air travel accessible to the common man by connecting underserved and unserved airports across the country. The recent extension will now keep this initiative airborne until 2036, paving the way for more opportunities, economic growth, and increased tourism.

Aiming for Growth: How Does It Help?

With over 601 routes established and 71 new airports built under this scheme, the UDAN initiative has been a game-changer for the Indian aviation sector. It aims not only to increase air connectivity but also to drive business growth, create jobs, and enhance tourism. Additionally, the scheme’s goal is to make air travel more affordable, so more people can experience the joy of flying without breaking the bank.

Numbers that Soar!

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the UDAN scheme has successfully operated 2.8 lakh flights and served approximately 1.44 crore passengers. Before this initiative launched, there were only 74 operational airports in India in 2014. By 2024, that number is expected to rise to 157, with ambitious targets set for 350-400 by 2047!

Future Plans: What’s Next?

As part of the extension, the Ministry is reviewing financial requirements and exploring ways to enhance the scheme. With two more years until UDAN 2.0 rolls out, efforts are underway to outline its next version to keep the momentum going.
