Bahraich, October 14: In a shocking turn of events, the Mahsi area of Bahraich has transformed into a veritable fortress as law enforcement ramped up their presence following violent clashes that erupted during a Durga idol immersion. The state has deployed a staggering number of police forces, including five teams from the UP Special Task Force (STF), to restore order in the beleaguered district.

A Show of Force: Police and STF Take to the Streets

The atmosphere in Bahraich is tense as the UP STF, accompanied by Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), flood the streets to quell the unrest. Not only have two Superintendents of Police (SP) and two Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) been dispatched to the front lines, but additional ranks including two Additional SPs and four Deputy SPs have also joined the fray.

“The situation is gradually coming under control,” reported Bahraich SP Vrinda Shukla, emphasizing that efforts to disperse rioters are ongoing. Meanwhile, DM Monica Rani assured the public that they are working tirelessly to normalize conditions.

Riotous Scenes Unfold: Properties Set Ablaze

The unrest began on the evening of the Durga idol immersion when a procession faced alleged stone-pelting from a particular community. When resistance ensued, gunfire erupted, resulting in the tragic death of a local, Ram Gopal Mishra, who was pronounced dead at the medical college. The incident left over 15 individuals injured, prompting chaos in the streets as furious crowds set vehicles ablaze.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities have taken drastic measures, including shutting down internet services across the region. Several police officers have already faced disciplinary action, with the station in-charge of Hardi and Mahsi being suspended.

The Aftermath: Legal Action and Community Reactions

As tensions simmer, police have detained around 30 individuals allegedly involved in the rioting, and First Information Reports (FIR) have been filed against notable figures including Abdul Hamid, Sarfaraz, Fahim, and others.

Local BJP MLA, after negotiating with the police administration, confirmed that the family of the deceased has agreed to proceed with the final rites, indicating a possible step towards reconciliation amidst the turmoil.

Authorities, including Home Secretary Sanjeev Gupta and ADG Law and Order Amitabh Yash, have rushed to the scene to assess the situation first-hand, indicating that the state is taking the matter seriously.
