Bihar's Flood Crisis: Broken Dams and Rising Rivers Herald an Impending Disaster – What to Expect in the Next 60 Hours!

Bihar, a flood crisis looms as heavy rainfall has led to the breaking of multiple dams, causing widespread concern across various districts. With predictions of severe flooding in the next 60 hours, particularly in the Seemanchal region, residents are bracing for disaster. Over a dozen dams have already breached, allowing floodwaters to inundate surrounding villages. The situation is exacerbated by continuous downpours in both Bihar and neighboring Nepal, raising the water levels of key rivers like Kosi and Gandak to alarming heights. Here are the crucial developments:

Flood Threat Escalates: Bihar is on high alert as floodwaters threaten to devastate over 20 districts, especially in northern Bihar's Seemanchal region.

Dams Breach: In a single day, more than six dams have collapsed, resulting in significant flooding in residential areas. The situation has left local communities anxious and vulnerable.

Rising River Levels: Heavy rainfall in Nepal has caused the Kosi and Gandak rivers to swell. Authorities have released 6.5 lakh cubic feet of water from the Kosi and Gandak barrage, marking the highest discharge since 1968.

Predicted Disaster: Experts warn that the next 60 to 70 hours will likely reveal the full extent of the disaster, with floodwaters expected to engulf more areas.

Local Impact: In places like Supaul, thousands of families are facing immediate danger as the Kosi river reaches dangerous levels, reminiscent of the catastrophic floods of 1968.

Emergency Response Teams Deployed: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have mobilized 16 teams to assist in flood-affected areas, with four teams stationed in Supaul.

Government Coordination: The Central Minister of State for Home Affairs has held meetings with NDRF to ensure that effective rescue operations are in place and that aid reaches those in need.

Community Preparedness: Residents are evacuating to higher ground as water levels rise, recalling the traumatic floods of previous decades. The community's resilience is being tested as they brace for the potential impact of nature’s fury.
