Bullet Train Bridge Collapses in Gujarat, 1 Dead, Several Feared Trapped

A major accident took place in Anand district, Gujarat, as a temporary structure at the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train bridge collapsed on Tuesday evening.

A tragic accident occurred in Anand district, Gujarat, on Tuesday evening when a temporary structure at the construction site of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project collapsed and killed one worker. The incident occurred near Vasad village, according to Gaurav Jasani, Anand Superintendent of Police. According to initial reports, four workers were trapped between concrete blocks, and two have been rescued. The unfortunate news is that one worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The accident occurred close to the Mahi River, just outside the city of Vadodara, even though the actual construction work for the bullet train project is going on by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). A temporary steel and concrete support structure holding foundational work crumpled without warning. Rescue efforts using cranes and heavier equipment have begun and so far, are searching for anyone else trapped inside. The authorities have requested an investigation into the accident. Preliminary reports state structural flaws, but only a full review will note the exact cause.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is 508 kilometers in length, out of which 352 kilometers falls under Gujarat and 156 kilometers in Maharashtra. Out of the 20 planned river bridges in Gujarat, 12 have been completed and include a 120-meter-long bridge over the Kharela River in Navsari district. There are 12 stations on the route, which cover Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadiad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

This is one infrastructure project in the form of bullet train connecting the two large cities, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Although progress remains smooth, the accident reveals more of the importance of following all the safety protocols diligently. Now, NHSRCL along with the local governments is taking extreme caution ensuring such accidents do not come up again as the work takes shape.
